A stroke occurs when a blood vessel is blocked or bursts and blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted. When a stroke occurs, brain cells stop getting the oxygen and nutrients they need to function and the part of the body controlled by the damaged area of the brain cannot work properly. A stroke is a medical emergency, but quick treatment may help limit damage to the brain and increase the chance of a full recovery.
