Ischemic strokes are the most common type of stroke in adults. They usually occur when a blood clot forms in a blood vessel and causes a blockage of blood flow to part of the brain. Blood clots can form in the brain or neck, or travel from other parts of the body and cause a stroke. A blood vessel that is extremely narrow can also cause an ischemic stroke.
