Memory loss (amnesia) is a condition where memory is disturbed or lost. It can come on slowly or suddenly and can be temporary or permanent depending on the cause. Causes of amnesia include: old age, alcoholism, brain damage due to disease or injury, brain tumours, syphilis, depression, emotional trauma, head trauma or injury, seizures and stroke.
