Seizures involve abnormal movement or behavior of the muscles due to unusual electrical activity in the brain. Epileptic seizures are caused by missed medication, lack of sleep, stress, alcohol or drug abuse. Women with epilepsy tend to have seizures more often during menstrual periods. Pregnant women who have seizures need immediate attention. Illegal drugs can cause seizures in people without epilepsy. High fever can cause seizures (febrile convulsions) in young children.
