Causes of a low platelet count include:low production of platelets in the bone marrow due to cancer in the bone marrow, some types of anemia, cirrhosis, viral infections, toxic chemicals, chemotherapy drugs and too much alcohol; trapping of platelets in the spleen due to:an enlarged spleen, cancer or liver cirrhosis. The body may destroy its own platelets due to an autoimmune disease, certain medicines, infections, surgery, pregnancy and conditions that cause too much blood clotting.
