The characteristic lesions in erythema nodosum start as red tender nodules with poorly defined borders ranging from 2-6cm. After 2weeks, the lesion is more painful and hard and soon after may become squashy. The lesion is initially bright red but fades to resemble a bruise. They can appear anywhere on the body surface but commonly appear on the shin.
