The obvious symptom of rectal prolapse is a lump or mass coming out of your anus. Initially you may only have this with a bowel movement, but as the condition develops it may also happen when you cough or stand up. However, if you have internal intussusception rectal prolapse, there will be nothing coming through the anus, but you may feel as though something is still there after emptying your bowels. You may be able to push the lump back in using your fingers. But as the conditions worsens, this may become more difficult and you may find that it drops out again, or it can't be pushed back in at all. Rectal prolapse can make it difficult to control your bowel movements and you may end up soiling your underwear or have a slimy discharge. You may also have some bleeding from your rectum and discomfort in the area.
