The only way to effectively treat a full-thickness rectal prolapse is surgery. The operation is performed under general anaesthesia. This means you will be asleep during the operation. The operation will involve either a cut in your abdomen or a cut made in your perineum. The perineum is the area between the anus and scrotum in men, and between the anus and opening of the vagina in women. Your surgeon will advise you on the best course of treatment for you.
