To diagnose rectal prolapse, your doctor will ask you about your symptoms and examine your rectum-this may involve inserting a gloved finger inside your rectum. You will be referred to a doctor who specialises in the bowel. S/he may carry out further tests such as a:defecography-a special X-ray that shows the rectum and anal canal when you're having a bowel movement; sigmoidoscopy-a procedure using thin tube with a tiny light and camera at the end that allows your doctor to look at the inside your bowel; an endoanal ultrasound, a procedure using thin probe that looks at the muscles used for bowel control. You may have other tests to rule out any underlying conditions that may be causing your rectum to prolapse.
