From the time a person gets in contact with the germ that causes meningitis, it takes 2 to 10 days to show the signs and symptoms. Symptoms of meningitis include onset of fever, serious headache and vomiting, stiff neck, drowsiness or unconscious, confusion, purple rash and appearance of head bruising. An infected child below 5 years will be slow and inactive, irritable, prone to vomiting, have a poor appetite and bulging of the soft part of the head. If your child or anyone has the above signs take them to the nearest health unit IMMEDIATELY for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Make sure all children are immunised and given boosters when there is an outbreak.
