Meningitis is a serious bacterial infection of the fluid in a person's spinal cord and the fluid surrounding the brain. It is a common infection in children and usually occurs after severe throat and ear infections. Meningitis can be easily caught by people with TB and HIV and children who have not been immunised. It can be quite severe and may result in complications like brain damage, coma, mental retardation, hearing loss, paralysis, convulsions and even death if not treated quickly. One can get meningitis through breathing in droplets from the nose or throat of an infected person. If meningitis is suspected, go to the nearest health unit IMMEDIATELY for diagnosis and treatment.
