The immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) has been seen in persons with weakened immune system, who have meningitis caused by two kinds of the Cryptococcus germ; Cryptococcus gattii and Cryptococcus grubii. Several weeks or even months into appropriate treatment, you may have a sudden deterioration with worsening meningitis symptoms and progression or development of new brain and movement related symptoms.
