Anal pain is often caused by haemorrhoids, constipation, injury to the anus and infection. People who have anal sex may also get tears and STIs in the anus, causing pain, swelling, tenderness and even bleeding. Anal pain caused by constipation can be reduced by not straining during long calls and wiping gently after, drinking enough water, exercising regularly and eating more fruit and vegetables. If the pain increases or if infection or injury to the anus is known or suspected, seek help from the nearest health unit.
