Sleep apnea is more common in older men and people who are overweight. Women are more likely to develop sleep apnea after menopause. People who have small airways in their noses, throats or mouths, allergies or other medical conditions that cause congestion in these areas are more likely to have sleep apnea. Also at risk are smokers, those with enlarged tonsil tissues in the throat or people with high blood pressure.
