Polio is prevented by improved water supply and sanitation practices. The best prevention is immunisation with 4 doses of Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV):these should be given at birth, 6 weeks, 10 weeks and 14 weeks. The vaccination can also be given to older children and adults if they missed it as a child but it is best to immunise babies when they are young to keep them protected. Immunisation is FREE at government health facilities.
