Mild gum disease can be treated by brushing the teeth every day and getting regular cleanings from a dentist. For severe gum disease(periodontitis), your dentist will clean the teeth using a method called root planing and scaling. This removes the plaque and tartar build-up both above and below the gum line. You may also take antibiotics to help get rid of the infection in the mouth. In very severe cases, one may need to have surgery.
