Ascorbic acid(vitamin C) deficiency, or scurvy, occurs when you do not get enough in your diet. The need for dietary vitamin C is increased by:conditions that cause fever and diarrhoeal disorders, smoking, iron deficiency, cold or heat stress, surgery, burns and protein deficiency. Heat(eg, sterilization of formulas, cooking) can destroy some of the vitamin C in food, so infants on formula are more likely to have vitamin C deficiency.
