You may develop symptoms of ascorbic acid deficiency after wks-mths of not enough vitamin C. Exclusively breast-fed infants rarely suffer this deficiency at an early age. The commonest symptoms are general weakness, irritability, weight loss and vague muscle and joint pains which may develop early. Later, symptoms related to defects in connective tissues develop. Skin changes, coiled hair and bleeding around follicles may develop. Gums may become swollen, purple-coloured, spongy and they bleed easily in severe deficiency. Eventually, teeth become loose and detach.
