In treating you, your doctor will first try to identify why you're deficient in vitamin B12 so that the cause can be treated. E. g, if you don't get enough vitamin B12 in your diet, you may be referred to a dietician for advice on how to change your diet. You may be advised to take vitamin B12 supplements. Vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia is usually treated with injections of vitamin B12.To start with, you will have a course of injections, e. g once a week for 6 weeks. After this, you may need repeated doses every 3 months or so. If you have pernicious anaemia, you will need to have injections for the rest of your life. Vitamin B12 injections can sometimes cause bruising and soreness where the needle was inserted. Other side effects include feeling sick, headaches and dizziness.
