In treating you, your doctor will try to identify why you're deficient in folate so that the cause can be treated. If you don't get enough folate in your diet, your doctor may give you advice on how to change your diet, or refer you to a dietitian. You may be advised to take folate tablets. Folate comes in a synthetic (artificial) form called folic acid. This is a water-soluble vitamin that your body can use instead of folate. You will usually need to take 5mg/day for 4mths. Before starting treatment, your doctor will check your vitamin B12 levels. This is because taking folate tablets can hide a vitamin B12 deficiency.
