A variety of viruses can cause conjunctival infection leading to inflammation of this membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the front part of the eyeball. One group, the adenovirus, is the most common cause and Herpes Simplex Virus is the most problematic. Those most at risk are persons with certain conditions such as weakened immunity and malnutrition. Very young children are also more likely to suffer viral conjuctivitis. Bacterial infections are common and a common cause of blindness is Chlamydia trachomatis.
