Brucellosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria called brucella. These bacteria are usually passed to humans from animals like sheep, goats, cattle, pigs and dogs. Brucellosis is transmitted to humans through contaminated and untreated milk and milk products and by direct contact with infected animals, through wounds on the skin while handling infected animals or meat. Breastfeeding mothers with brucellosis may transmit the infection to their babies.
