In the majority of cases doctors don't know what causes pulmonary stenosis. Some heart defects are thought to be caused by faulty genes that are passed down from parents to their baby. They can also be linked to a mother's health during pregnancy. Infections, eg rubella also known as German measles, are thought to cause congenital heart defects.
