In more severe cases of pulmonary stenosis, an operation may be needed where a tube is inserted into the heart. The tube has a deflated balloon in the tip and when it is placed in the narrow valve, the balloon is inflated to stretch the area open. The surgery may be a valvotomy where the valve is cut to widen it or a shunt put in to divert blood.
