Surgery is done when the corneal ulcer cannot be adequately controlled by medication or when there is a risk for perforation(hole).The ophthalmologist(specialist eye doctor) will carry out an emergency surgical procedure called a corneal transplant. When a donor is not available and the condition is serious, the whole eye may be removed.
