A specific test for diabetic retinopathy is fluorescein angiography. This is a test carried out by the ophthalmologist (eye doctor) that uses fluorescent dye injected into vessels to show if there are any leaks. Your doctor will also carry out tests to look for other complications of diabetes. Blood tests may be taken to check the blood sugar levels and lipid levels. A urine test may also be done to look for proteins, a sign of kidney damage in diabetes.
