Diabetic retinopathy is the damage to the eye's retina that occurs with long standing diabetes. It is caused by damage to the blood vessels of the retina. The retina is a layer of tissue in the inner part of your eye. It is important for sight. The blood vessels become larger and may be blocked in some areas. New vessels may also start forming. It is the most common cause of blindness in adults between the ages of 30 and 65.
