Hypertension is the abnormal rise in systemic blood pressure, the pressure of blood flowing from the left side of the heart. The more common form is called essential or primary hypertension which has an unknown cause. Secondary or inessential hypertension is the rise in blood pressure attributed to an identifiable cause. The cause may be treatable. It affects only 5% of all hypertensive patients.
