Kidney disease is the most common cause of secondary hypertension. Other causes are hormonal conditions, eg a rise in cortisol, adrenaline, thyroid and growth hormone. Pregnancy and a congenital heart disease called coarctation(narrowing) of the aorta are other causes. Some antidepressants when taken with foods containing tyramine (cheese, pickled meat and fish, chocolate) can cause the condition.
