Paralysis of the diaphragm may be caused by trauma to the chest, so sportspeople are at risk or those in high risk occupations, eg soldiers. It may also be caused by a disease, eg polio, so lack of immunisation to the disease is a risk factor. Surgery, radiation and tumor may also damage the nerve involved.
