Paralysis of the diaphragm impairs the exchange of gases and so you might notice bluish discoloration of the nose especially. This is called cyanosis. Since a weak diaphragm may not adequately contain abdominal contents, the contents may protrude into the chest(a hernia).If the diaphragm is affected on both sides, you are unlikely to survive without mechanical ventilation.
