Regular check-up will be needed to check the degree of improvement. This will usually involve measurement of arterial blood gases. If the paralysis is one-sided, the patient might make do though with laboured breathing. If both sides are affected, then the condition is more serious and may be fatal. Intensive care unit will be needed for mechanical ventilation as you will not be able to breathe on your own.
