Surgery is the main treatment in traumatic conditions. This may involve repairing the nerve though the healing process is usually slow and long. Surgery may also involve the pacing of the diaphragm to generate an impulse. Few centres if any can carry out this procedure in Africa. Surgery may also be useful in the case of complications due to the paralysis, e. g hernia.
