Symptoms of hydronephrosis depend on where the obstruction is and for how long. You may have renal colic-a severe, on-off pain in the flank(the area between the ribs and hip) on the affected side, pain, pressure and swelling of the bladder. Slowly progressive hydronephrosis often has no symptoms, or aching discomfort in the flank. Hydronephrosis can have general intestinal symptoms, eg nausea, vomiting, stomach pain. Urinary tract infections can cause pus in the urine, fever, discomfort around the bladder or kidneys.
