Whatever the cause your doctor's first step will be to relieve the obstruction by draining urine either by catheterization or use of stents(tubes inserted into your ureter/kidney to keep the passage open for urine to flow). Urgent relief of chronic hydronephrosis is usually not required. Your doctor will try to find the cause and level of obstruction and then advise you on the way forward.
