The complications of diabetic retinopathy are few but very serious. Blindness is the most common of these. Glaucoma is another complication. It is due to increased fluid in the inner chamber of the eye and quickly leads to blindness. It is an emergency condition. The 3rd complication is retinal detachment where the retina peels away from its underlying support, either in patches or as a whole. Cataracts, an opacity of the lens, are another complication.
