The most common risk factor for corneal ulceration is infection of the eye. People who wear contact lenses are at higher risk of corneal ulceration. This may be due to increased risk of infection or physical trauma. Any trauma to the eye, chemical burns, conditions that cause drying of the eye and conditions affecting proper closure of the eyelid all increase the risk of corneal ulcers.
