Symptoms of acute pancreatitis can be severe enough to need immediate hospital treatment. The doctor will ask about your symptoms, examine you, may ask about your medical history and you may have blood tests to check levels of digestive enzymes. You may have the following scans to check the pancreas, gallbladder, pancreatic and bile ducts:an abdominal ultrasound; a CT scan; an endoscopic ultrasound-a camera attached to a flexible tube is passed down the throat and into your small bowel. An ultrasound produces sound waves to make images of the pancreas and bile ducts. This can sometimes trigger an attack of acute pancreatitis; an MRI scan-you will lie inside a cylinder-shaped scanner. A dye is injected into your vein that helps to show cross-section pictures of the pancreas and related organs.
