You are at more risk of acid reflux if you are: overweight; smoke; drink alcohol excessively; eat lots of spicy; acidic or fatty foods; have a hiatus hernia(when part of your stomach slides up into your chest).Only about 1 in 10 people who have acid reflux develop Barrett's oesophagus. You are more likely to develop it if you've had severe symptoms for many years, if you're a man, or if you're' 50.
