Most people with Barrett's oesophagus don't have serious problems and may not even be aware that they have it. Occasionally, some of the cells can become increasingly abnormal and develop into cancer. Under 1 in 100 people with Barrett's oesophagus develop oesophageal cancer every year and it usually takes many years to develop.
