Febrile convulsions - Outlook

Although febrile convulsions are frightening to most parents, most febrile seizures are harmless and the risk of adverse effects is rare. Injury may occur if a child falls or chokes on food or saliva while convulsing. Measures can be taken to prevent injury during a convulsion. (See our section on how to take care of a child during a convulsions). There is no evidence for seizures causing brain damage or worse school achievements. Even after long seizures, majority recover completely and only a few might be at risk of epilepsy. Children with neurological abnormalities such as cerebral palsy, delayed milestones and others have an increased risk of developing epilepsy.
