Febrile convulsions - Self-help

Though a febrile seizure is frightening, try to stay calm and carefully observe the child. Place the child on a protected surface such as the floor or ground to prevent accidental injury such as falling or knocking on objects. During the convulsion, do not hold the child or restrain them as this can result in injury. Inserting objects into the child's mouth will not help and can result in injury or an obstructed airway. Place your child on their side or stomach to prevent choking. When possible, gently remove any objects from the child's mouth. If possible, note the time the convulsion has taken and give this information to your health care provider when you take the child to the hospital. Take the child to the nearest health facility as soon as the convulsion stops.
