Lack of iron can cause anaemia which reduces the amount of oxygen carried by the blood. Anaemia is common in pregnant women and it can be serious as it can prevent a baby from growing properly, causing premature birth, still birth and lowered immunity or infection in the mother. To prevent it, pregnant women should eat food with lots of iron and take iron tablets which can be obtained through a health-worker.
