Diphtheria is spread through sneezing, coughing and close contact with an infected person. A person can carry the bacteria without having symptoms. Diphtheria can also be spread by contaminated objects or foods. Diphtheria spreads easily in crowded areas where infants and children gather, like health units and schools. It also spreads when there is poor hygiene and when children are not immunised. If you think your child has diphtheria, go to the nearest health unit IMMEDIATELY for diagnosis and treatment.
