Constipation is the painful passing of hard, dry stools (definition may depend on number of stools passed per day or week). Constipation can be caused by the hormones in pregnancy, lack of exercise and a poor diet low in fibre. Iron tablets given to pregnant women can also lead to constipation. Help prevent constipation in pregnancy by exercising, drinking enough water and eating foods high in fibre like fresh fruits and vegetables. Very often for children, constipation is caused by incomplete bowel emptying and poor toilet training techniques during transition from diapers to potty to toilet.
