Constipation can also be a symptom of certain medical conditions e. g. irritable bowel syndrome(IBS), inflammatory bowel disease(Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis), painful conditions of the anus e. g. piles, anal fissure or tears following childbirth, conditions affecting the nervous system e. g. Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, rectal or colon cancer or an underactive thyroid.
