Ova, ovum and eggs are words describing a woman's reproductive cells. They contain her half of the genetic material needed to make a baby. The other half comes from a man's sperm. Eggs which are fertilized by sperm make a baby. Fertilization happens as a result of unprotected sex. Eggs are stored in 2 sacs called ovaries, located near the womb. On average 1 egg is released every month and leaves the body as a menstrual period if it is not fertilized.
