Bilharzia, also known as Schistosomiasis or snail fever, is a disease caused by parasitic worms that live in fresh water snails. Most water bodies in Africa have freshwater snails infected with bilharzia. You can get bilharzia during activities like swimming, rice farming, making bricks, fishing or washing in infected water. If not treated, it can lead to damage of the liver or bladder and eventually death.
