The contraceptive pill is taken daily and has hormones in it which prevent pregnancy. If used properly its a very reliable birth control method with few side effects. The pill does not protect you from HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)- ALWAYS use condoms to protect yourself from these.
