Sickle cell disease has no cure and must be managed well to avoid complications. The most important way to manage the disease is avoiding things that trigger or cause painful events, such as illness, infection, cold temperatures, wind, dehydration, too much exercise, stressful events and low oxygen caused by smoke. Infected persons must seek treatment for all illnesses. Never have dental procedures without telling the dentist that you have sickle cell disease. Some people need regular blood transfusions to lower the risk of stroke and treat anaemia and other problems. Regular medical check-ups are an important part of managing sickle cell disease.
